San Diego Taco Truck and Coco Bomb - Linda Vista

I love living in Linda Vista. I actually live next to Friars Road in a spot where if I wanted to seem more higher class, I can say I live in Mission Valley, but I'm proud to say I live in Linda Vista. For a small area, it has some good food: Thai, Vietnamese, Mexican (some you can find inside a liquor store) , etc. Plus it has a nice asian supermarket with decent seafood. Farmers Markets on Thursdays. Lots of neat little things tucked away. And we have sushi.

One Saturday, I had craving for some tacos from a truck, then something sweet.

San Diego Taco Truck

On the San Diego Foodies Facebook page, someone mentioned about good taco truck in Linda Vista. I've always seen a taco truck at one corner of Linda Vista Road and Ulric (on the Filiberto's side). I realized he was talking about that truck.

The truck didn't have any identifiable sign with any name. Upon research, I found that the name of the truck is called San Diego Taco Truck. Yep, not very creative. But then you realize, it is next to a Mexican bakery shop called The San Diego Bakery. Someone really needs to brush up on their branding and marketing.

The menu is somwhat limited, but they represent a wide range of proteins (minus seafood). The usual suspects are there. Looks like you can only hget it as a taco or mulitas. No burritos or nachos or the like. The prices are pretty cheap.

There's a condiment and salsa bar. Sorry, forgot to get closeup, but you can load your tacos with chopped raw onions, cilanto, cucumber, radish, and about 3 different salsas.

They don't sell drinks directly from the truck. You can buy your drinks at the San Diego Bakery next door.

I've yet to eat at The San Diego Bakery. They have a wide array of Mexican baked goods and hot foods/sandwiches. I will eventually review this place but I wasn't in the mood for pastries at the time. I was there just to buy a quick drink (for which they had a decent selection of sodas, etc. I will return to do a full review.

They do have tables and chairs set up. I do notice at night that they are usually pretty busy.

I should have taken a picture before I loaded up with condiments and salsa.

I got the pastor, carnitas, cabeza and asada. These street taco size so don't judge :D

The pastor had a nice flavor but was not that spicy. It was cooked on the flattop grill and not from a trombo. The carnitas were fairly moist and tasty. The asada was good. Wasn't dry at all. My favorite was the cabeza, as it was pretty moist and had a good flavor. The texture was almost like a chopped brisket.

If you look across the street, at the opposite corner of Ulric and Linda Vista Road, there is usually another taco truck there. I've been to that one, more for the seafood dishes (if I don't feel like going to Kiko's). I will revisit that one soon.

The San Diego Taco Truck is a fine taco truck. Pretty satisfying meal for cheap. Give it a try.

Coco Bomb

Coco Bomb is a Thai Cafe/Dessert shop located near the corner of Ulric and Linda Vista Road. It is walking distance from the San Diego Taco Truck so it was a carefully planned effort to fit in this place afterwards. I've been here a couple of times before and really liked it.

It is a small quant shop, with a few dining tables and benches. It is very clean and well decorated. There are some tables outside and evokes a jungle theme just like the inside.

The menu is not the most extensive, but it covers the essensentials: coffee (hot or iced), special drinks, ice cream and sundaes. There are special Thai desserts with Thai-focused ingredients such as coconut, pandan, mangos, and jack fruit. There are special items not on gthe main menus, such as custard-filled squash and coconut cake.

They also have a section with Thai snacks that you would find at a specialty supermarket.

In the past visits, I've gravitated towards the Coconut Sundae, which is 3 scoops of your choice of coconut, vanilla, or chocolate ice cream. in a younng coconut shell. You get a choice of topping, ranging from hawaiian bread, cashews, peanut, etc. I always go with mango, and add a topping of sticky rice. They also include some of the coconut flesh and drizzle sweetened condensed milk.

I am a big fan of this. The mango is soft, ripe and sweet and the sticky rice pairs well with it as always. The ice cream itself is not made in-house but it was still pretty good. The extra coconut was a nice touch. Very nice presentation and it hit the spot during those hot days.

This visit, i thought I'd change it up a bit. I decided to try the coconut coffee. You get a choice of 1 or 2 shots of espresso (same price). I opted for 2 shots. I wasn't sure if I was going to like it, and I'm still not sure if I did :D. It wasn't bad but was a weird combination.

This time I decided on the mango and sticky rice. In the past, I never really liked mango. It was probably the way my family prepared it. It was alway served before peak ripeness so it was always bitter and always had this weird aftertaste. For most of my life, I'vd had an aversion to mangos. Nowadays, I've developed a taste and appreciation. I love the Peach-Mango Pies at Jollibee, and I'll consider mango desserts if they are on the menu. I guess the trick is, to have it not served by my immediate or extended family.

That being said, the mango slices were perfect. They were buttery soft and perfect ripeness so they had a good amount of sweetness to them. This was even before the condensed milk. The girl suggested putting sesame seeds on it sand it was a good suggestion. It gives a distinct contrast to the sweetness.

The workers are very friendly and they seem to have alot of pride in their shop. They've always been cheerful and alway have suggestions on what to order. It's a small shop, but it is cute and quant.

One visit, a guy and a girl walked into the shop, and they were dress formally, like they were going to a formal internatial wedding. They were talking to the employees there. Then all of the workers and the girl and guy went outside and taking turns taking pictures with the couple as if they were celebrating something. When I finished, I walked out and asked if they wanted me to take a picture of all of them together, and they took me on the offer. After I tok the picture, the girl explained that they just got married, and that she works there. I thought it was a sweer moment that they shared with the coworkers and I was glad to help them remember it.

It seems to do pretty good business even though the location doesn't seem to be the best. There isn't a dedicated parking lot for it so it's either street parking or the side road next to it, which is a couple of spots. You can probably park near the San Diego Bakery area (but not near the clinic). Give them a try if you're in Linda Vista.

I fairly certain that it's owned by the folks who used to have the La Princesita truck Denver. They now have a nice little kingdom. The woman from the Bakery told me that. Good for them!
